NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY ALERT

Vehicle Jewelry-Theft Scam

Unmarked cars are stopping residents to "ask for directions," then stealing jewelry using distraction and disorienting sprays.

Cars with no number plate asking for directions or help are a warning sign-stay alert. Keep your distance - don't walk up to or lean into the vehicle to "help."

Never let anyone examine or "test" your jewelry at the car window, even briefly.

Refuse any spray, perfume, or handkerchief offered by a stranger-it may be used to disorient you.

More than one person in the car, one talking while another watches? Treat it as a warning sign.

These individuals may be armed - do not attack or confront them. Stay at a distance and let the police handle it.

Note the car's color, make, and any marks-even without a plate- and tell a neighbor right away.

Feel numb, dizzy, or unusually drowsy after such an encounter? Get medical help immediately and inform police.
